Publish of Final Screening Assessment report for Bisphenol A
04 November 2008
The Canadian Government has of late released documents regarding classifying Bisphenol A (BPA) as toxic substance. The concerned regulation is to minimize BPA in baby bottles and infant formula packaging and to reduce BPA released into the environment.

The Proposed Risk Management Approach document is now ready for public comment for 60 days.

The Approach includes:
- Ban polycarbonate baby bottles.
- Collect information through surveys on BPA exposure.
- Collect research on the effects of BPA on the human body and fetal exposure risks.
- Develop migration targets for BPA in infant formula cans.
- Explore/research migration targets for BPA in general canned foods.
- Establish an "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" principle for food packaging of products for newborns.
- Include BPA in the Domestic Substance List (DSL), to be added when released in 2009.
- Institute procedures for ensuring the protection of the environment against the harmful effects that may cause from a release of BPA.
- Study BPA under a more comprehensive monitoring and surveillance strategy.
